Put Yourself in a Position of “F*** You”

Updated: Sep 9, 2025

Inspired by "The Gambler"

In the 2014 movie The Gambler, John Goodman’s character, Frank, delivers an unforgettable monologue that has resonated with anyone striving for independence and empowerment.

He advises:

“If you’re wise, you will get yourself to that position: ‘f*** you.’ And the only way to do that is to take a shot. Not just any shot, but the shot. Otherwise, you’re just another schmuck out there workin’, beggin’.”

Frank’s speech isn’t just about gambling; it’s about life. It’s about creating a situation where you’re free to live on your own terms, without being beholden to anyone. It’s not about arrogance or rebellion for its own sake—it’s about true autonomy.

What Does THE “F*** You" POSITION Mean?

The “f*** you” position isn’t about burning bridges or giving people the middle finger. It’s about financial, emotional, and mental freedom. It’s about putting yourself in a position where your choices are dictated by your values and goals, not external pressures.

For some, this might mean building a financial safety net so you’re not tied to a job you hate. For others, it might mean developing self-confidence and resilience so you’re not dependent on someone else’s approval. Whatever it looks like for you, the goal is to eliminate the desperation that leads to compromising your integrity or happiness.

Why Most People Don’t Get There

Frank’s speech is so powerful because it highlights a truth many people avoid: most of us live in fear. Fear of losing a job, fear of judgment, fear of change. Fear keeps us in situations where we lack control.

To get to “f*** you,” you have to take risks. You have to reject comfort zones, embrace uncertainty, and put in the hard work to create something of your own—a business, a skill set, a mindset that allows you to walk away from anything or anyone that doesn’t serve you.

How to Get to “F*** You”

 1. Build a Financial Cushion

Money might not buy happiness, but it buys freedom. Start by saving or investing so you’re not living paycheck to paycheck. When you have a financial safety net, you’re less likely to compromise your values out of desperation.

 2. Master a Skill or Trade

Be so good at what you do that you’re irreplaceable. When you bring undeniable value, you have leverage.

 3. Develop Self-Confidence

Stop seeking validation from others. The most dangerous trap is living for someone else’s approval. Learn to trust yourself.

 4. Create Boundaries

Freedom isn’t just about money; it’s also about time and energy. Know when to say no. Protect your mental and emotional well-being by drawing clear lines.

 5. Take Risks

You can’t play it safe and expect extraordinary results. Sometimes you have to gamble on yourself, even if the odds feel stacked against you.

The Cost of Not Reaching “F*** You”

Without freedom, you’ll always be a pawn in someone else’s game. You’ll be forced to make choices based on fear instead of passion or purpose. Frank’s monologue underscores that the real tragedy isn’t losing a gamble; it’s never betting on yourself in the first place.

Final Thoughts

Putting yourself in a position of “f*** you” is about liberation. It’s about living life on your own terms, without being shackled by fear or dependence. It requires courage, planning, and persistence, but the reward is immeasurable.

So ask yourself: What’s holding you back from taking that shot? And what’s one step you can take today to start moving toward true independence?

As Frank said, “F*** you is the only position you want to be in.”
