The Art of Getting Knocked Down (And Getting Back Up Again): A Life Skills Coach’s Guide to Resilience

Updated: Sep 8

Let’s talk about resilience. That glorious, sometimes exhausting, but always essential skill that keeps us going when life hits harder than the regret of sending a risky text… and seeing the three dots disappear as your intended recipient evades into the abyss without responding.

As a life skills coach, I see resilience in action every day—people facing challenges, setbacks, and the occasional existential crisis when they realize adulthood doesn’t come with a manual (or free snacks). But the truth is, resilience isn’t about avoiding failure; it’s about learning how to fail better and keep going anyway.

Cue the Rocky Theme Song 🎵

If you’ve ever seen Rocky Balboa, you know there’s a line that perfectly captures the spirit of resilience:

“It ain't about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

And honestly, isn’t that just life in a nutshell? You’re out here trying to be your best self, and then—BAM!—life delivers a surprise uppercut. Maybe it’s a job rejection, a relationship setback, or the realization that your “5-year plan” is now your “let’s-just-survive-the-week plan.” Whatever the challenge, the key isn’t avoiding the hits; it’s learning how to take them and still get up.

Resilience in Action (or, Why Falling Down is Part of the Game)

  1. The Job Interview Flop: You’re in the middle of your interview, sitting up straight, confidently answering a question, when you shift slightly in your chair and—oh no—it makes that noise. The unmistakable, betrayal of a faux fart. The interviewer’s eyes widen slightly. Your brain screams, Say nothing, let it go! But instead, you panic and blurt out, “That was the chair!” as you aggressively try to recreate the sound to prove your innocence. It, of course, does not cooperate. Now you’ve spent 20 crucial interview seconds making a weird, chair-based one-man show. Resilience means accepting the awkwardness, finishing strong, and walking out of there with your dignity mostly intact.

  2. The Life Plan That Goes Off the Rails: Remember when you thought you’d have everything figured out by 30? That was adorable. Turns out, life loves plot twists, and sometimes your “master plan” turns into more of a “choose-your-own-adventure” novel. Resilience means embracing the unexpected, pivoting when necessary, and realizing that sometimes the scenic route is where all the best lessons (and best snacks) are found.

  3. The Great Toddler Negotiation: Ever tried reasoning with a three-year-old? It’s a masterclass in resilience. You think you’re in control, but suddenly you’re in a full-blown debate about why they must wear pants to the grocery store. And honestly? Some days, talking to an adult is no different. Whether it’s a coworker who insists they sent you an email (they didn’t) or a family member who refuses to see logic, resilience means learning how to navigate conversations where common sense is… well, optional.

How to Build Resilience (Without Losing Your Mind)

  • Reframe Failure: Failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of it. Every misstep teaches you something, even if that “something” is just how not to microwave foil.

  • Laugh at the Chaos: Life is messy. If you can find humor in your mistakes, you’ll bounce back faster. Plus, it makes for a great story later.

  • Surround Yourself with Good People: A solid support system can remind you that setbacks don’t define you—and they’ll also bring ice cream when you need it.

  • Just Keep Moving Forward: Whether it’s a baby step or a full sprint, resilience is about progress, not perfection. Keep showing up for yourself.

At the end of the day, resilience isn’t about being invincible—it’s about being adaptable, persistent, and just stubborn enough to refuse to quit. So get back up, shake off the dust, and take another shot at it.

And if all else fails? Put on Eye of the Tiger and channel your inner Rocky. You’ve got this.
